Bregman sets HR career high ahead of Derby

HOUSTON — Alex Bregman continues to be in Home Run Derby form.

Bregman clubbed his career-high 20th homer of the season in the first inning of Friday’s game against the Tigers, taking former Astros teammates Mike Fiers deep to left-center field to give the Astros a 2-0 lead. It’s his 12th homer in his past 27 games.

The All-Star, who leads the Astros in homers and will participate in Monday’s T-Mobile Home Run Derby, was hitting .316 with 14 homers and 38 RBIs in 37 games prior to Friday. He was named the American League Player of the Month for June and was selected to his first All-Star Game, joining five teammates in Washington next week.

With his two first-inning RBIs on Friday, Bregman has 63 RBIs on the season, which gives him the club lead over slugger Evan Gattis.
